Street newspapers (or street papers) are newspapers or magazines sold by homeless or poor individuals and produced mainly to support these populations. Most such newspapers primarily provide coverage about homelessness and poverty-related issues, and seek to strengthen social networks within homeless communities. Street papers aim to give these individuals both employment opportunities and a voice in their community. In addition to being sold by homeless individuals, many of these papers are partially produced and written by them.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries several publications by charity, religious, and labor organizations tried to draw attention to the homeless, but street newspapers only became common after the founding of New York City's Street News in 1989. Similar papers are now published in over 30 countries, with most located in the United States and Western Europe. They are supported by governments, charities, and coalitions such as the International Network of Street Papers and the North American Street Newspaper Association. Although street newspapers have multiplied, many still face challenges, including funding shortages, unreliable staff and difficulty in generating interest and maintaining an audience.

Street newspapers are sold mainly by homeless individuals, but the newspapers vary in how much content is submitted by them and how much of the coverage pertains to them: while some papers are written and published mainly by homeless contributors, others have a professional staff and attempt to emulate mainstream publications. These differences have caused controversy among street newspaper publishers over what type of material should be covered and to what extent the homeless should participate in writing and production. One popular street newspaper, The Big Issue, has been a focus of this controversy because it concentrates on attracting a large readership through coverage of mainstream issues and popular culture, whereas other newspapers emphasize homeless advocacy and social issues and earn less of a profit.

What is the difference between a normal newspaper and the Wall Street Journal.?
Q. Also, on special days, like Sunday, what do both newspapers do? Is the Journal deliever on Sundays, but the market is close? If so, what does the Journal do differently for Sunday? What are the benefits and drawbacks of having the Journal versus a normal newpaper like the usa today.

A. The "Wall Street Journal" focuses on the financial world and how economics (micro, macro and global) affect the US and other countries. Other "normal" newspapers focus on news, local, regional and global, while devoting only a page or two to stock reports and financial news. The Wall Street Journal is the classiest newspaper out there; they don't report much on Brittney Spears and other "frivolous news". I don't know what they do on Sundays. Is there one on Sunday? Taking the Journal only is fine if you are interested only it what it reports. There aren't any drawbacks if that is all you care to read about. Taking USA Today exclusively, is enough for most people who are not in the brokerage business and who do not earn all their… [cont.]

How can I make my own newspapers and sell it?
Q. Well, Im somewhere from 11 - 15 i wanna make my own news papers and sell it but how? im definately not gonna go on the street and stuff. i want to leave it on a store or something?

A. A few things you may have already thought about: 1) The news you will print - I assume since your planning to sell in a store, maybe you going to let ppl knows what's happening locally, in your school, etc. 2) How you will publish and print the paper. Do you own a decent printer, or have access to a copier? ANd how many do you expect in your readership, 10, one hundred, one thouand? 3) Are you planing to do this for profit or just as human interest paper. Because it is really dififcult to get people to shell out more than coinage for a paper. So your profits may have to come from putting in local store ads.

why do newspapers etc insist on spoiling story lines ?
Q. for instance in coronation street and eastenders, i never read them as i prefer to wait and see. I like to guess what will happen and see if I am right, does it irritate other people too. some people are totally lacking in imagination is what i think. half the pleasure is the expectation and wondering what balmy thing will happen next. and watching it unfold

A. It doesn't irritate me because I just flip past them and ignore them, but I know what you mean. The reason they do it is because the soaps themselves reveal the storyline to the media so that ratings will go up because they hope to have more viewers. Same goes with the soap magazines.
