Q. I've always wanted to work with animals, and an animal shelter seems like one of best places to work at! I would love to help spread the word for animals in dire need of homes, but what educational requirements are required to work in an animal shelter? Do I need to obtain some kind of license from the city or county to physically handle animals? Is a high school diploma or GED neccessary for consideration of employment? Asked by Aesthetically Sound - Wed Oct 14 16:11:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Start by volunteering your time with an animal shelter. If you plan to make a career out of it, you can go back to school and get a vet Tech Degree. The animal shelters have good people working there already and they are always willing to bring in more and educate them as well. however the best thing to do is start by volunteering at any local animal shelter as they are always looking for people to help and will gladly take you. This way you are not spending a lot of money on continuing education just to find out caring for animals is not for you. There is always more to the care of a abandoned pet then most people think so it will be a great way to actually see if this is what you want to do with your life. Truthfully some people can… [cont.] Answered by Colfy - Wed Oct 14 16:28:50 2009 What to do after bringing a puppy home from shelter? Q. So, today we might be picking up a puppy form the shelter =). What should we do when we leave the shelter with him? Take him to the vet? Take him home, then what? What should we do with him to make him feel comfortable. I want this to be as least stressful as possible for the pup. Asked by Lauren* - Sun Dec 9 10:00:35 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Alright Lab Lover!!! I think alot has to do with the obvious condition of the dog and where are you getting it from. I bring in animals from animal control which is a high kill shelter. Since this shelter is high on dogs coming in everyday you have more risk at alot more viruses and diseases. I just got my puppy out of there two weeks ago now and he brought us kennel cough! Showed up 4 days later after exposing my whole household to it. Quarantining is always a good idea but sometimes its not a option in some households. I will from now on make a appt. with the vet before bringing into my household again. If for anything, to make me feel better. You'll be surprised how dogs act when coming out of the shelter. They tend to come… [cont.] Answered by Boxer Lover - Sun Dec 9 10:17:14 2007 Where would I get good information on starting a no kill animal shelter?
Q. I've worked for the local animal shelter for many years. It's great, but we have to turn away many animals because we don't have enough room. Helping animals is my passion. I want to know how I can get information on starting a responsabe, no kill animal rescue. I know the shelter I work for got funding from the state. But not information on how to run a responsable animal shelter. Please don't take that the wrong way, they are responsable, I just want to be to. Can you get that kind of information from the AKC? Asked by dream catcher - Fri Sep 21 04:04:38 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. . Many, if not most Humane organizations began without a physical facility, but rather a network of foster homes to house pets while awaiting adoption. You will see many of them advertising on this well-read and heavily promoted site: would recommend contacting any of the listing organizations listed in your general area, to ask how they obtained their 501(c)3 status in your county/state. You can pick up dogs as they come in to the high kill shelters without adoption fees, once you have that 501(c)3 status, thereby placing them in foster while awaiting re-homing. You will find the information on these sites to be helpful: , A new guidebook published by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) should be helpful… [cont.] Answered by Chetco - Fri Sep 21 04:18:21 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Shelter" |
