Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter, because of the inability to afford them. This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or compared to worldwide averages. About 1.7 billion people live in absolute poverty; before the industrial revolution, poverty had mostly been the norm.

Poverty reduction has historically been a result of economic growth as increased levels of production, such as modern industrial technology, made more wealth available for those who were otherwise too poor to afford them. Also, investments in modernizing agriculture and increasing yields is considered the core of the antipoverty effort, given three-quarters of the world's poor are rural farmers.

Today, continued economic development is constrained by the lack of economic freedoms. Economic liberalization includes extending property rights, especially to land, to the poor, and making financial services, notably savings, accessible. Inefficient institutions, corruption and political instability can also discourage investment. Aid and government support in health, education and infrastructure helps growth by increasing human and physical capital.

How does china keep their poverty rate so low?
Q. I am doing a modern Oratory assignment and poverty. How does china keep their poverty rates low? What are they doing that the US isn't? How long have they been working on the issue of poverty?
Asked by ellie rox - Tue Mar 4 15:44:53 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They do not accurately report their poverty rate. this is due to several reasons including a strong socialist government that lies about social progress, as well as a very different definition of poverty compared to western countries. but since the government mandates that employers provide housing, and basic medical services for the vast majority of people in china the government can LIE about their poverty rates. the chinese view the situation as what I would call it 2 chinas. 1 is the industrialized areas on the east coast. In those areas the income levels are higher, so are the education levels. Then you have the second area which is in the middle and western parts of the country. These are the VILLAGE chinese. people who have… [cont.]

How has globalization affected the way international organizations tackle poverty?
Q. I keep hearing that there's an increasing gap between rich and poor states, but that world poverty is decreasing. Huh? What are international organisations actually doing?? What goals have they reached in tackling poverty?

A. Poverty is a social construct. It is defined by these organisations as certain goals: Food, clothes shelter- Basically all the things that we would think indicated civilisation. Often NGOs adopt the stratgey of seeking these resources and providing the means for a subsistence of better form of living. Such as drinking water, sources of food, tools for famer the land. They dont usually simply give cash because of government are given the task of distributig it and simply use it for themselves. But this isnt the whole story; very often those in poverty are marginalised peasants or people who cant find or are unable to work. As an economy expands more jobs become availabe these people are drawn to the cities and get jobs. These jobs get them… [cont.]

What will be the projected level of poverty in 2025?
Q. What do you think it will be higher, lower, or the same as now? I am talking about the poverty of America as a whole nation. Also, if anyone can come up with a real number that would be helpful. If you do provide a real number please provide a source as well. Sorry for the confusion. I stated the additional details wrong. I wanted to know how much a family could take in to be considered poor. For example right now it is at $17,000 a year and under.

A. Actually all depends on inflation rate - on average currently we had about 3-4% per year but this year it began to rise. If it will rise to 5-6% then will slow down a bit then on average inflation could be 5% annualy so 17*(1.05)^(2026-2008)=17* 2.407=40'900 (approx) Though change in standarts and overall economic wealth also should be considered.

Poverty

From Wikiquote Jump to: navigation, search

Poverty is a state in which an individual, group, or population lack essential elements of life within their societies. This usually has the connotation of a lack of basic survival items like food, clothing, shelter, and health care, or the financial means to obtain these, but can also mean having less tangible problems like social exclusion, dependency, and the ability to participate in society. Its exact meaning varies considerably with context and the social environments involved.
