Poverty refers to the condition of not having the means to afford basic human needs such as clean water, nutrition, health care, clothing and shelter. This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or compared to worldwide averages.

Before the industrial revolution, poverty had mostly been the norm. Poverty reduction has historically been a result of economic growth as increased levels of production, such as modern industrial technology, made more wealth available for those who were otherwise too poor to afford them. Also, investments in modernizing agriculture and increasing yields is considered the core of the antipoverty effort, given three-quarters of the world's poor are rural farmers. Today, continued economic development is constrained by the lack of economic freedoms. Economic liberalization includes extending property rights, especially to land, to the poor, and making financial services, notably savings, accessible. Inefficient institutions, corruption and political instability can also discourage investment. Aid and government support in health, education and infrastructure helps growth by increasing human and physical capital.

How do we eradicate poverty in a sustainable way?
Q. The general realm of capitalism seems to be an effective way to move a nation away from poverty. (china being a good example). However, will simply social awareness and donation make enough of a difference to eliminate poverty? Or is a global economic reform necessary?

A. Poverty cannot be eradicated, any more than illness could be. It can, however, be lessened to such a significant degree that it ceases to be a major issue. Think about the comparison: diseases like smallpox and influenza, once killing millions, are now minor problems in much of the world, thanks, in part, to medical innovators. You're right that the Chinese are better off today than they were in the past, but they (and we) are only being allowed to experience a watered down, sanitized-for- bureaucrats'-protection version of capitalism. The stranglehold that government desperately wants to keep on business and on your money restricts, yet fails to eliminate, the positive effects of capitalistic behaviour on the prosperity of those… [cont.]

How do we stop world poverty when it's a matter of government and overpopulation?
Q. If one looks at the poverty stricken countries around the world, two issues become apparent. On the one hand the governments of these countries are very corrupt and care more for filling their personal coffers than caring for their own countrymen. Secondly, without proper education, condom distribution, and other protective measures, these poor countries are without a doubt suffering from overpopulation. Without those two issues being handled, the fight to end world poverty and hunger is almost futile.

A. Remember that any problem can be solved by throwing enough money at it, especially someone elses money - just ask any liberal. Results don't matter, it is making yourself feel better by giving away someone elses money that counts.

Poverty is a state in which an individual, group, or population lack essential elements of life within their societies. This usually has the connotation of a lack of basic survival items like food, clothing, shelter, and health care, or the financial means to obtain these, but can also mean having less tangible problems like social exclusion, dependency, and the ability to participate in society. Its exact meaning varies considerably with context and the social environments involved.
