homelessness?
Q. i am being evicted out of my house through no fault of my family, its cos my hubby aint in the army no more, i have filled in homeless forms and they have said to go to our neighbourhood office on eviction day and we will be placed in temporary accomodation, what is this, considering i have 2 dogs a cat and a child? and our stuff is going into storage paid by the council, how long will it take til we get a perm address and have my stuff back? my hubby is working but he is only working part time due to medical problems... hence why he isnt in the army

A. You ought to be given emergency accomodation. Why did your husband not make enquiries with Army before he left. I know there would have been help to find you accommodation and if it is not too late why not go and see someone from the NAAFI who maybe able to come up with an answer. Good luck and all the best.

A. The worst times of day are the mornings when people in the shelters have to leave for the day and the nights when it can get very hairy out there. Look up the following people on the internet and get something from their experiences: Sister Mary Scullion Cheryl Honkala Sister Mary has been responsible for an entire city changing its policy toward homelessness and Cheryl was a homeless woman who is now the director of a program to prevent and alleviate homelessness.

Asked by Elisa M - Tue Jan 27 17:18:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The money we pay in taxes supports social programs like welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, etc. An increase in poverty, in other words a higher need for these social programs, means taxpayers will have to pay more to cover the costs. There is a whole lot more, but that's the basic gist of it from a financial standpoint.

A. How about "Should the Government provide healthcare for the homeless?" Make sure that whatever question you decide on, you (personally) have a clear answer/opinion on it. If you are wishy-washy on your answer to your own question, you will have a hard time being persuasive.

How can I find entry level housing and homelessness jobs?
Q. I recently graduated with a degree in sociology and would gladly take any job to do with social work, but would prefer a job that deals with housing and homelessness. EVERY listing I've found is looking for people with experience and I have no idea how to gain that experience because I can't find any entry level jobs.

A. I have seen a lot of housing/homelessness related jobs on idealist, have you tried there? It's mostly non-profits. Also, there are a lot of different ways to work in housing/homelessness. You could be a community activist, organizer, deal with legal aspects, logistics...if you can't get a job right off the bat try to get experience in a similar area but with another focus (youth work, immigration, senior centers). Also look into the state and county government websites for employment, and even federal government although it's more competitive. Finally, don't be afraid to take an position like administrative assistant. It can get you in and allow you to get more insight into the area.

Q. What issues of homelessness would most interest sociologists? How would a sociologist's views on the issue differ from an anthropologist, an economist, a psychologist, and a historian?
Asked by j-ism - Wed Sep 17 09:16:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Homelessness from a sociological standpoint would involve looking at the homeless person's family structure (their support system or lack of it). Also, the relationships among homeless people as a population (their social network and the benefits/drawbacks of having one). They might study the systems that are supposed to help homeless people (the Salvation Army, etc) to see if they are effective. I could only guess about Anthropology. Historians might look at the circumstances which lead to homelessness as a social problem, i.e. the industrial revolution. Psychologists would be more interested in how homelessness, when viewed as an event in a person's life, would affect their psyche. It is interesting to note that a large percentage of… [cont.]

A. I'm homeless and penniless by my own deliberate choice. I gave up being a slave to wages years ago, and drastically decreased my needs, and now I'm much more satisfied with my life than I was when I had money and a home. It's a lot easier for me, having no familial responsibilities, than it would be for most people. The people around me are more honest, not putting on false fronts to impress others. I have time to read and learn, and time to enjoy my friends. My schedule is my own, not that of people I neither know nor care about. I mean what I said about being penniless - I never panhandle, I get nothing at all from the government or any other sources, and I never ask anyone for anything. It gives me freedom, though there are a myriad… [cont.]

Will Obama fight homelessness by making homes mandatory, and fining people who don't have homes?
Q. This approach worked so well in MA to reduce the number of people who don't have health insurance. They made health insurance mandatory, and if people didn't buy it, the state made them pay a fine equal to the cost of insurance. Why not take the same approach to joblessness or homelessness? Why not reduce homelessness by making homes mandatory, and if people don't get a home, make them pay a fine equal to the cost of a home? Wouldn't that make just as much sense? Why wouldn't that be just as effective for fighting homelessness?

A. I hear Canada will find it's citizen a home if they do not have one. But of course you don't have a choice where you live (and why should you) so a lot of good people are mixed in with low scum criminals and there is no segregation, in fact they make sure there isn't.

A. Check out www.invisiblechildren.com . It's a totally different cause, however, they did something called the Global Night Commute last year. Basically, everyone came to the rally and first did a march (they walked from one major monument to a park with signs) and then everyone slept in boxes or sleeping bags right on the ground. No mattress pads, no tents, etc. It poured rain in a few of the cities during the event and everyone still stayed all night long because this is what really happens! Some people just can't go inside when it starts to rain like we can. You should try to get some speakers for your event. There are probably soup kitchens, anti-homelessness coalitions, shelters, etc, that would love to send a speaker out for you.… [cont.]

A. Homelessness matters to all. I was not raised to know anyone homeless or to expect it to happen to me but it did. And unlike what most people think I have a job. I am female and I live in a shelter for women. I have lived there for seven years and what I have seen!!! Blows my mind. 1. Most women who become homeless were sexual victims at one point in their life. 2. This is obvious to all the women in the shelter: lack of support is actually the #1 reason for women becoming homeless. Either family support is unable due to them (the family) being financially, mentally, or medically unstable or else outright cruel, like domestic violence. 3. Mental illness does not seem in my opinion to play as large a part in homelessness for… [cont.]

A. This question does not have a simple answer. I worked in welfare and Child Protective Services for 8 years and I learned a lot. The problem with poverty is it is a cycle. Many of the people on our system today are there because that is all they know. Their parents were poor and they did not break the barrier to get out of it. I think our education system has so much to do with it. I have taught in at-risk areas and the communities really don't help or support schools that really need it the most. Most successful people do as much as they can to separate themselves and their families from the ugliness of the world. I guess it surprises me the most because I live in a city that is the Bible Belt of Texas. The church is the… [cont.]

A. Hmmm. The rich western world? I suppose the U.S. is rich compared to most 3rd world countries. I don't have those statistics. As an American who has been homeless, I can tell you that many of our homeless definately do have mental disorders & many have physical disorders that make them harder to house & care for than others. Many families are homeless & children are living in abandoned cars because the shelters are not safe for them. The shelters do feed people, but they are becoming over populated with perverts & sickos who prey on single women & children. Our government grants the helping hand agencies massive amounts of money & this money is being diverted & misused by con artists who have weaseled their way into jobs within these… [cont.]

A. The movie somehow reflects the reality. BUT,, The true situation of homelessness in Japan is a bit different. These days, young homeless people do not sleep on street or park as some movie or news say. They go to internet cafes and sleep there. It's not free. But very cheap. So they manage to take shower and some meal there. These people are called "Internet cafe refugees" and raising concerns among Japanese society. This Internet cafe refugees have come to surface in the last few years. So this is the change which have taken place since the movie.

A. One person cannot take care of a hungry world. What we can do is make the world more aware of this. ..especially in our USA where stereotyping is alive and well. The average homeless person is either mentally ill with no where to go, addicted to drugs or alcohol with no means for treatment, those whohave lost jobs and homes, which includes children and whole families and single parent families and the ages of the homeless are getting younger each day. Any of us could end up in their situation. Making people aware of the truth and organizing fundraisers, going among the homeless and living with them for a week, and doing all you can do and getting others involved is a good start. It is also good to let your local , state and federal… [cont.]
