homelessness?
Q. i am being evicted out of my house through no fault of my family, its cos my hubby aint in the army no more, i have filled in homeless forms and they have said to go to our neighbourhood office on eviction day and we will be placed in temporary accomodation, what is this, considering i have 2 dogs a cat and a child? and our stuff is going into storage paid by the council, how long will it take til we get a perm address and have my stuff back? my hubby is working but he is only working part time due to medical problems... hence why he isnt in the army

A. You ought to be given emergency accomodation. Why did your husband not make enquiries with Army before he left. I know there would have been help to find you accommodation and if it is not too late why not go and see someone from the NAAFI who maybe able to come up with an answer. Good luck and all the best.

How long has homelessness been and major problem in America?
Q. I'm doing a debate project on homelessness and I would really like to find out how long homelessness has been a major problem in America. I can only guess that it became a large problem during the Great Depression and has gone downhill form there.

A. The worst times of day are the mornings when people in the shelters have to leave for the day and the nights when it can get very hairy out there. Look up the following people on the internet and get something from their experiences: Sister Mary Scullion Cheryl Honkala Sister Mary has been responsible for an entire city changing its policy toward homelessness and Cheryl was a homeless woman who is now the director of a program to prevent and alleviate homelessness.

Is it possible to prevent homelessness for all by 2020 in America?
Q. How would you end homelessness in America for veterans, adults, families, youth, and children? Keep in mind that some can't find a job, some are physically disabled, some are the elderly, and some are mentally ill.
Asked by Dawn - Wed Jun 23 22:15:17 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't believe it is possible because it's not possible to help some who honestly don't want help. The government can't continue to keep taking from those that are working to give to those that aren't, as more people become homeless because of it! It's time for family and friends to step up and start taking care of each other and stop believing this is a problem for a broken system to keep throwing money at.

Asked by Elisa M - Tue Jan 27 17:18:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The money we pay in taxes supports social programs like welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, etc. An increase in poverty, in other words a higher need for these social programs, means taxpayers will have to pay more to cover the costs. There is a whole lot more, but that's the basic gist of it from a financial standpoint.

Anyone have good ideas on how to stop homelessness in the U.S?
Q. Just to let people know, the leading cause of homelessness is because people don't have health insurance. If people had health insurance, it would help everyone. For more information about homeless people, go to www.nationalhomeless.org.
Asked by Jessica F - Sun Feb 11 12:51:37 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not the leading cause. Were you homeless? I was, for three months of my life that I will never forget. The number one reason these people were in that situation was lack of education. I was in and out in three months and landed back on my feet, but some people do not have the skills to do that. I managed to land a job and apartment in three months. Not easy let me tell you. To reduce the amount of people that have children in homeless shelters would take a six year program. I have already done the math and it will take about ten million to start up for about 40 families. These people will have to get education, no one on drugs would be allowed, no having more kids allowed etc. There would be strict guidelines to follow, but… [cont.]

A. Politics and the anti socialism that prevails in one of the major parties.Homelessness is a lack of opportunity, self discipline brought on by a lack of opportunities from not being Properly Educated. You can't help everyone,we need to try harder. Each homeless person is an individual not part of a project. Each with a story or reason to get to this sorry state. Let your project cover some of the aspects of a real live Homeless Person and not just a word in a study.

I feel bad for them but at the same time it is not the governments job to deal with it i would have to be a large private organization. Otherwise there is nothing that any normal people can do except let a homeless person into your house and i would never let that happen just because it is a little strange having a random person in my house. Then you also have to ask the question to some of them deserve a home? what about the people who just don't want to work? what about the druggies? the Alcoholics? Its their fault that they got into it in the first place why should someone pay for them to get into a home? thats like buying fresh needles… [cont.]

A. It is time to give the homeless a voice. If we can fight in a war, we can fight against homelessness. If we can build stadiums across the nation, we can do something to prevent homelessness. We came up with solutions as well. I did a booklet for my cultural diversity psychology class. If you like, send me your e-mail and I can send you the file. Feel free to use any of it. The only thing is that it won't print out as a booklet. You can figure it out or cut and paste.

Will Obama fight homelessness by making homes mandatory, and fining people who don't have homes?
Q. This approach worked so well in MA to reduce the number of people who don't have health insurance. They made health insurance mandatory, and if people didn't buy it, the state made them pay a fine equal to the cost of insurance. Why not take the same approach to joblessness or homelessness? Why not reduce homelessness by making homes mandatory, and if people don't get a home, make them pay a fine equal to the cost of a home? Wouldn't that make just as much sense? Why wouldn't that be just as effective for fighting homelessness?

A. I hear Canada will find it's citizen a home if they do not have one. But of course you don't have a choice where you live (and why should you) so a lot of good people are mixed in with low scum criminals and there is no segregation, in fact they make sure there isn't.

Can homelessness cause mental illness or is mental illness heightened by homelessness?
Q. I am aware that many people who are mentally ill are homeless. However weren't they already mentally ill, prior to becoming homeless? My main question is, if a person is medically proven to not have a mental illness or depression becomes homeless, does the traumatic effects of being homeless make said person mentally ill? If so, with help can such a person become socially normal, or are the mental changes permament?
Asked by DesiDani - Fri Nov 16 21:51:19 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If I have caught your meaning correctly, my response is that both of these feed each other. The mentally ill person -- with poor judgement and living outside of reality makes a series of bad decisions. The series of bad decisions (mental illness) uninterrupted results in losing a place to live or homelessness. The homeless situation lacks in stable healthy surroundings that would promote or sustain health -- and the mental health of the individual is further disrupted and endangered. The further the mental health of an individual spirals down, by living in high stress conditions, the greater his dysfunction grows, and the less able he is to get himself out of the homeless situation. Like I said, one condition feeds the other. This… [cont.]

Can someone please edit my essay on homelessness?
Q. Homelessness is a social problem that concerns many social workers because it affects people s well being. The definition of homelessness can vary. It includes not only those who are living on the streets or in shelters and hotels but also those who are living in temporary accommodation or in housing that is unfit for human conditions. There are at least 600,000 homeless men, women, and children in the United States. But one-third of this population is composed of families with children. I m sure everyone has seen this- people driving by and watching people sleeping on the sidewalks, underneath bridges or at park benches. Or you see someone with a sign saying I m hungry, have no money, and need food. This is really sad because most… [cont.]

A. First of all, indent each paragraph. Look at your story. Wherever you see you go in another direction from the previous sentence make a new paragraph. Use your spell-checker to edit the words that you have miss-spelled. You have a good essay and I would not do anything other than what I have told you.

A. Homelessness matters to all. I was not raised to know anyone homeless or to expect it to happen to me but it did. And unlike what most people think I have a job. I am female and I live in a shelter for women. I have lived there for seven years and what I have seen!!! Blows my mind. 1. Most women who become homeless were sexual victims at one point in their life. 2. This is obvious to all the women in the shelter: lack of support is actually the #1 reason for women becoming homeless. Either family support is unable due to them (the family) being financially, mentally, or medically unstable or else outright cruel, like domestic violence. 3. Mental illness does not seem in my opinion to play as large a part in homelessness for… [cont.]

How do you help with homelessness?
Q. I live in a large city where the homeless population is as large as the small town I moved here from. It breaks my heart to see them on the street. I've made care packages with food, snacks and cigarettes (yeah I know, but I understand that addiction) but I know that's not enough. A. What a thought provoking question, and how kind are you to want to help?! You're on the right track. You recognize that the homeless ARE people who need help, and that while care packages help, they're a band-aid. You can organize drives to collect things like socks, toiletries (travel size) and blankets for them. Again, a band-aid, but will provide relief. You can volunteer at your local mission or daytime shelter - spend time talking to some of the people. Learn their stories. Treat them like people. It's amazing what an impact genuine kindness can have on another human life. To really get engaged in SOLVING the problem - you need to isolate the symptoms. Why are a lot of these people homeless? Is it because they choose to be? I… [cont.]
