Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters.

The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. Some shelters limit their clientele by gender or age.

In the United States, most homeless shelters expect clients to stay elsewhere during the day, returning only to sleep, or, if the shelter also provides meals, to eat; people in emergency shelters are more likely to stay all day, except for work, school, or errands.

There are daytime-only homeless shelters, where the homeless can go when they cannot stay inside at their nighttime sleeping shelter during the day. Such an early model of a daytime homeless shelter providing multi-faceted services is Saint Francis House in Boston, Massachusetts which was officially founded in 1984. It was based on the settlement house, clubhouse and community center support and social service models.

In Australia, due to government funding requirements, most homelessness services fill the role of both daytime and nighttime shelters. Shelters develop empowerment based "wrap around" services in which clients are case managed and supported in their efforts to become self reliant. An example of such a service provider in this area in Australia is Najidah.

Why would a homeless person prefer to sleep in their car as opposed to a homeless shelter?
Q. That is, if there is a homeless shelter bed available. I think some may believe a shelter is more dangerous than living in a car. I don't know if it is true. Never been homeless.

A. It usually is safer to sleep in a car than in a shelter if you are smart about where you park to sleep. Shelters have many dangers and downsides. I wrote an article about why homeless people don't use shelters - the link is in source(s) below. You can find many more reasons with their explanations explanations on that page but here are a few of the reasons: 1. Predators hang around homeless shelters. 2. Homeless shelters reject many people. 3. Homeless shelter check in/out times interfere with employment. 4. Some homeless shelters use a demeaning check-in process. 5. Many shelters require participation in drug treatment programs (even if the person has no addictions) which often interfere with employment or job seeking activities. 6.… [cont.]

How hard is it emotionally to volunteer at a homeless shelter?
Q. I'm gonna start volunteering at a homeless shelter and I'm extremely sensitive to other people's problems especially children and I'm worried I might not be able to handle it. Does it get easier? I imagine it will be very difficult in the beggining..

A. Start in the kitchen behind the counter or sweeping up. You are not their therapist or babysitter so don't feel obliged to act in that capacity. Relax, you are doing good things, everything will be fine. And you will have a boss, just like in a real paying job.

If you move to a homeless shelter, are you allowed to bring personal items with you?
Q. By this, I mean things like blankets, pillows, personal documents, computers, televisions, maybe small video games, and stuff like that. Do you have to leave those things behind, or are you allowed to bring them? Are you even allowed to have a car at a homeless shelter?

A. I worked at a homeless shelter for a few years..You can bring some personal items..Not computers or T.Vs..Not sure you would want to because they might not be there for long..No blankets or pillows where I worked due to mites, lice, etc..We did allow people to park there..We would only allow people to use one tub or bin and keep 2 suitcases in a closet..It was more like a dorm and there wasn't a lot of storage available..Some people would end up leaving some items with friends or family until they found a place for themselves..When we 1st opened up, you had to take everything with you when you left because we were only open from 6pm-8am then everyone had to leave..Since it is now open 24/7, people can leave things..Hope this helped..
